Star Wars The Right Way
Episode One
Part Ten
Qui-Gon Jinn made very good time across the desert on foot. Obi-Wan was in trouble, again. Qui-Gon puffed a bit as he slowed down to a crouched walk. Well, at his student’s age, that was to be expected. Many, many Padawan Learners had been lost over the centuries during this phase of their training. Qui-Gon himself was not a stranger to such occurrences, but he shuddered at the thought of losing Obi-Wan. There was just something about the bright-eyed young man that he would terribly miss. He set his shoulder against a boulder as he spotted a smoldering wreck farther down a nearby ravine. There were certainly a lot of footprints heading down that way. He had to have a look.
As he deftly moved from shadow to shadow, his long legs covering the distance expertly, he spotted two forms darting away from the wrecked cruiser. It was looking more and more as though this was indeed the right ship. He let them skitter out of sight before he edged closer, his senses on full alert. He heard rustling from inside the craft and shifted his still warm lightsaber back into his tired palms. He made absolutely no noise as he crossed the threshold and peered inside the dark vessel. He waited in safety for his eyes to adjust, but he broke discipline and rushed in when he heard an all-too-familiar groan of pain. There on the floor of the shattered cruiser was Obi-Wan, looking almost as shattered himself. But what disarmed Qui-Gon the most was that his apprentice was still pulling parts from the walls, looking them over with trembling hands before setting them to the side.
The Jedi Master grabbed the latest bit of scrap from his tenacious apprentice’s hand and knelt down beside him. On the inside, Qui-Gon wanted to smile down at him and tell him how impressed he was that he was both still alive, and still trying to accomplish the mission in his state. But Obi-Wan didn’t need a father right now, though sometimes he felt like one. He stared down at his apprentice as the young man sighed aloud and hesitantly looked up from the floor.
“I’m sorry, master,” was the first thing he said. “I made you come all the way out here, and its just for this junk.”
Here, Qui-Gon did smile, a little. “I suspect that Anakin ran off with the impressive bits. Don’t worry.”
Obi-Wan scowled at the mention of Anakin, but then screwed up his face into a determined expression. He pushed himself upright with his right arm while holding his injured left arm close to his body. “I think I can make it back to the ship, master.” He grimaced as he looked up at Qui-Gon.
“I’ve no doubt, Obi-Wan. But the journey will be long, we’d best start back now.”
